Walking With God

Twenty years ago whilst on outreach one night I noticed a young woman on the street. She was looking for money to buy her next fix of drugs. The first time I met this lovely young woman it was a one cold rainy night, I can remember it well. She didn’t look the like she had been doing it very long - street working that is. She was shy and so high she was totally emotionally. disconnected. As we walked away after saying hello and offering her a conversation without wanting anything in return - I remember speaking to God about else we could do?

The answer to that prayer was simpler than I thought. As I look back I can see that God moved and positioned us to where we needed to be at the right time to be able to do the long journey with those who worked the streets. Here we are twenty years on. I still meet and have a coffee with that slightly older woman now. We talk about things coming up, I accompany her on difficult appointments she can’t face alone, pray for her in the background - I think thats called discipleship. The answer God gave me to the question I asked was to walk with those I meet and model how to follow him - its a live discipleship journey rather than a course to be learned. We developed a Chaplaincy style outreach (Street Life/Sacred Space) and this is still doing what we set out to do today - reaching people and sharing the love of God in various ways.

Here I am twenty years later and still being faithful. It looks very different now and yet is still very fruitful and needed. Even this very week we were out breaking new ground in a fresh location by walking prayerfully, speaking to people and offering a moment of prayer - creating a sacred space on the streets. It was a pure joy to meet new people and reconnect with others. Never did I think twenty years ago we would still be moving into those missional places here in the UK - I do sense the message of “Walking With God “ is written across my heart for life.

The other joy that has come out of knowing these precious people is eleven years ago I wrote a book to answer the questions they bombarded me with about God and how to have a faith in a way they could grasp that book was called “Walking With God.” I have just revamped this book and added some new chapters. It is a great resource to give away or work through someone who has questions about what a God shaped life looks like.
